ACM Scholastic Programming Contest (Hong Kong) |
|
| Every year, the Association
for Computing Machinery (ACM) sponsors regional and international collegiate programming contests. They divide the
world up into 16 regions. Each region has a regional contest, with the top two or three
teams in each region going on to the international contest. The format of the contest pits teams of three programmers competing against the clock. The software used for development are Windows NT and VC++ (5.0). Each team is given several programming problems (usually five to seven). They then try to write programs to solve as many of these problems as possible in the allotted time (usually three to five hours). The team that correctly solves the most problems wins. If multiple teams solve the same number of problems, the team that solved them fastest wins. Expertise in quick-and-dirty hacking is usually more valuable than rigid software engineering techniques in such an environment. Experience with debugging stupid mistakes is also a plus. This year, the Scholastic Programming Contest will be held on the 19th June 1999 at the City University of Hong Kong. We have a total of 14 teams from eight universities in Hong Kong and Macao participating in the contest. The participating Universities are (number of teams in brackets) : CHUK(3), CityU(2), HKBU(2), HKU(1), LingNamU(1), UMacau(2), UST(2) and PolyU(1). For the Programming Contest to be held this year at CityU on the 19th June 1999, it has been confirmed that registration for participants starts at 1:30 pm at the SCOPE lecture theatre, the opening session will be held in the SCOPE lecture theatre(from 2 - 2:30pm), the SPC will be held in the CS lab from 2:45 - 6:15pm, and the Chinese Checkers Competition wil be held in Lecture Theatre 15 from 2:45 - 5:45 (or 6:15pm depending on the number of participants). A closing ceremony along with a buffet dinner is to be organized by ACM-HK immediately after the contests. Details are to be announced at the opening session. Last year, the Seventh Scholastic Programming Contest was held on June 27, 1998 at the Hong Kong Baptist University. We have a total of 13 teams from seven universities in Hong Kong and Macao participating. After 4 hours of competition, a team from the City University of Hong Kong finally won the contest. After the contest, the winners, contestants, ACM members as well as some special guests joined together for dinner. You can see how wonderful the dinner it was.
