Activities in 1998

 

 

I. Technical Activities:

 

    (a) Seminars: The Chapter organized 5 technical seminars.  They are:

i)     System Re-engineering: An Integration Approach by Dr. Jack Huang on 16 January 1998.

ii)    Intelligent Database System by Dr. Jack Huang on 16 January 1998.

iii)    Liaison: A Workflow Model for Novel Applications by Dr. Daniel Chan on 15 January 1998.

iv)   PC'98 Technology by Mr. Andy Ip on 14 April 1998.

v)    Virtual Reality Technology and Research by Prof. Mark Green on 5 May 1998.

 

    (b) Distinguished Visitor Program:

The Chapter arranged a Distinguish Visitor Program visited by Prof Sankar K Pal on 16 November 1998.

The title of the seminar was ¡§Pattern Recognition in Soft Computing Paradigm¡¨.

 

     (c)  Conference:

The Chapter sponsored the Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference 1999 (ASP-DAC'99), the IAPR International Workshop on Multimedia Information Analysis and Retrieval (MINAR'98), and the HK Workshop on Cryptographic Technique and E-Commerce. The Chapter is also considering the sponsorship application of three other conferences.

 

The Chapter is going to organize the International Computer Science Congress 1999 which consists of 3 conferences, namely, International Computer Science Conference 1999 ¡V the flagship conference of the Chapter, the 6th International Conference on Real-Time Computing and System Applications (RTCSA'99) and the 1999 Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing (PRDC'99).

 

      (d)  Technical Visit:

On 4 November 1998, the Chapter organized a visit to IMS Hong Kong Telecom. 

 

II. Student Activities:

      (a) For Undergraduate Students:

 i)  The Chapter organized 2 Career Talks for undergraduates on 14 and 27 May 1998.

ii)  The Chapter organized an Undergraduate Student Project Competition. nineteen computing and computer related departments in the local universities were invited to nominated their best student projects to join the competition.

 

       (b) For Graduate students:

The Chapter continued its Graduate Student Conference Sponsorship which offers 6 scholarships to sponsor graduate students to attend computing or computing related conferences organized or sponsored by the IEEE or IEEE Computer Society.

 

III. Chapter Activities:

 

The Chapter has been well accepted by other computer societies in Hong Kong.  For example, the HK Computer Society, British Computer Society HK Section, the HK Institutes of Engineers and its Information Technology Division had invited us to their annual dinner. The Chapter was also invited to be a co-organizing computer society of the 1998 IT National Day Celebration Dinner. Our Chapter Chairman was invited to attend the 1998 Scholarship Presentation Ceremony and the Annual Dinner of the Open University of HK, and the Home-coming Night of the Engineering Faculty, The University of Hong Kong. Our Chairman had represented our Chapter to attend all these events. Furthermore, one of our Executive Committee member had joined the Section¡¦s Beijing visit.
