2003 Chairman
Report of IEEE HK Computer Chapter
Dear Chapter Ex-Co
colleagues and fellow IEEE members,
Year 2003 was a fruitful
year for the Computer Chapter. In
additional to the various seminars and conferences we organized and sponsored,
we continued to participate actively in local and government IT activities to
ensure our technical presence in the society and that our memberˇ¦s interests
are served.
As a tradition to the IEEE
HK Computer Chapter, we have organized and sponsored many seminars and
conferences (please see the Activity Report for details). We continued our participation in the
society as representatives in the Advisory Committee of the IT Legislator, Mr.
Sin Chung Kai, to provide our professional advice on IT legislative matters and
to play an advisory role to the Hong Kong SAR Government on IT policies. We were and are currently participating
in the working group on formulating a certification scheme of IT professional
in HK.
Whilst I am very satisfied
with the outcome in 2003, I am equally aware of the challenges I raised before
in my previous report for 2002. Firstly,
the lack of new members to join the Ex-Co remained an issue. The Chapter is known best for the
honest, open and friendly culture that all the past Chairs have established but
we will not be able to pass on this heritage without the new blood. Secondly, the economic downturn has been
affecting the memberˇ¦s participation on activities. Whilst the Ex-Co continues to organize various activities
for our members, this effort has not been met with the same enthusiasm from the
members and we need to further promote the Computer Chapter to existing and new
members. I am sure that the new
Ex-Co will continue to work hard and be able to resolve these issues.
Last but not least, my
gratitude must go to the Chapter Ex-Co - without their effort the above achievements
would not have been possible. With
their support and commitment, Iˇ¦m sure that weˇ¦ll continue to improve, better
serve our members and remain the best engineering society for the years to
come.
